  1. The observatory at Nungambakkam has received 131 cm of rainfall so far this year, which is 9 cm more than the annual average rainfall. Meenambakkam has received 118 cm so far against its annual average rainfall of 132 cm. The department forecast rain or thundershowers for the next two days.

  3. Bhaskaran,

We at keaweather have decided that the normal annual rainfall for Chennai is 126.8 cm. IMD chennai says it is 122 cm. IMD delhi says it is 126.7. Most websites say it is 126.8

  4. Anna salai sudden downpour for 8 minutes. but part of anna salai rain with sunshine. the rain confined to just 5 KMS north and north west of anna salari. No rains beyond mylapore. it is sunny. quite funny.

    ss.

  5. rain fall rate anything abov 38 millimeters per hour considered to be heavy rains. above 60 very heavy rains. Still we have not touched 60 per hour contineously for more than a minute. SO chennai yet to receive very heavy rains during this season. let us see.

even myalpore not much rain, just drizzles.

    ss.

  6. Baroda, continous overnight showers; today it is fully overcast with drizzling.. fabulous weather ..feel like return of monsoon.

  7. few minutes back showers looks like passing shower. even half of chennai not covered.

but lot of cloud gathering in bay of bengal and moving towards coastal tamil nadu. may be from tomorrow, there could be widespread showers.

    ss.

  8. @Super sai its Coimbatore and Bodinayakanur.. but no will realise it due to pleasant weather and mountain streams 🙂

  9. Driest in South India, would be in Anantapur district, A.P; Tadipatri, Kalyandurg etc.,

Annual rainfall would be around 40 CM.

  10. Southern and western TN have had a fabulous night of rainfall! Amaravathi, Vaigai and Perambikulam / Aliyar, Bhavani basins lashed.

  11. NE — Till now
    —————-
After the monsoon onset, there has not been a single dry day for TN. During NEM, normally between systems there is a break and that lasts for 3-4 days with nearly dry weather.
This non-stop rains is IMO, is the single biggest positive aspect of this monsoon, second one would be the rainfall in western parts of TN, which are not the greatest beneficiaries of NEM and this has resulted in good inflows into rivers and reservoirs

  12. virudhunagar, sivakasi, palayamkottai, tuticorin, ramanathapuram areas which receives 600 to 800 mm only per year is the dry belt in TN…

  13. Flood in vaigai is the last thing that could happen on earth 😛 😛

if at all there are rivers that cause flooding in TN are just 3 in number usually: Kaveri ,Thamirabharani and Adayar

  14. Yes Kea.. the roads will withstand i think.. very good drainage system and periodically maintained… but such a situation wont arise i think :).. the highest rain i have seen here is 30mm but the water vanished in seconds….

  15. Bright sunny intervals in thiruvarur…any chance f hvy rain for delta districts???tiz YEAR NEM NOT EFFECTIVE AND TILL NO HVY RAIN REPORTED IN DELTAZ….

  16. Its fairly widespread rains in TN

    Official IMD figures

    Coimbatore,Trichy 2cm

    Madurai 6cm

    Kodaikanal 4cm

    Kanyakumari 3cm

All the dams in TN(Except chennai lakes) have received rains.. with vaigai dam recording 8cm

  17. @ Kea:

Note sure of your account of 423 mm recorded on 27th oct 2005.

IMD figures are 21 Cm for Madras AP and 27 Cm for Madras city for that day.

In the last 20 years the heaviest 24 hr rain (in city or AP) would be 31 cm rain recorded in June 96.

  18. Its the western and central TN which does pretty bad….

Only 4 coastal districts Chennai Kancheepuram Cuddalore and Nagapattinam manage to get above 120cm

  19. hi kea people how r u doing?seems busy with analysis of north east monsoon!!!!climate here in vijayawada is very cool and offcourse dry with very poor sunshine and some cloudy ness.hey talking to u after cyclone jal which is the most disappointing cyclone of the centuary!!!!!!!!is’nt it true?i think we expected too much from JAL but it didnt give expected rainfall even cyclone LAILA is the best which caused more than 20 cms in just 24 hrs and smashed ongole and addanki with 55 cms and i think even though LAILA is just severe cyclone and jal very seviere but LAILA RANKS FIRST IN TERMS OF RAINFALL.I THINK NONE OF THE CHENNAITES EXPECTED THAT MUCH RAINFALL FROM LAILA BUT IT SHOCKED EVERYONE IN PEAK SUMMER,BUT POOR JAL STILL I AM UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHY JAL DIDNT GIVE THAT MUCH RAINFALL

  20. AND TALKING TO WETTEST CITY ON THE EAST COAST IN MY OPINION I DONNO WHETHER IT MAY BE IN ORISSA AND EAST GODAVARI DISTRICT,WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT,KRISHNA DISTRICTS RECEIVE HORRIBLE RAINS,KAKINADA IS THE HEAD QUARTER OF EAST GODAVARI DISTRICT AND THERE IS A PLACE LIKE ORATHANADU HERE ALSO IN ANDHRA AND ITS “AMALAPURAM”IN EAS GODAVARI DISTRICT AND HEY THESE DISTRICTS MAKE ANDHRA RICE BOWL OF INDIA.JUST VISIT THESE PLACES VERY LUSH GREEN FIELDS and amalapuram recored extremely heavy rain of 31 centimeters as u all know recently during the peak nortyh east monsoon season on november 2 2010.

Northeast monsoon -2005 Recording highest rainfall

The main factor for the comfortable water storage was, of course, the bountiful northeast monsoon.

In the last four decades, the last year’s average rainfall at the three reservoirs — Red Hills, Cholavaram and Satyamurthi Sagar — was the highest with 160 cm. Till now, the 1997 monsoon held the record with 158 cm.

Besides, 2005 marked another record, marking the maximum annual average rainfall. On an average, the three reservoirs registered 221 cm. In 1997, it was 217 cm and the previous year, 212 cm.

    Record rainfall

The year that went by also created other records at the observatory in Nungambakkam, setting aside the record in 1996 with respect to the annual rainfall. The observatory registered 257 cm last year against the previous high of 244 cm. Another record was the rainfall during October-December. The 2005 season saw Nungambakkam receiving 211 cm whereas the observatory registered 157 cm in 1997 and 160 cm in 1884.

  23. @ Kea

Yes got it. Immediately after I posted, I guessed the reason.

I was not in Madras then…so went by these ‘official reports’

  24. Kea
I was reading the comments on how Singapore handles the rains..
Having been in that region for some years,my observations are– yes, being a tropical zone,it practically rains throughout the year..there is an interesting saying that it does not rain a lot during the months which does not have “R” like May,June,July and Aug…but there are times when rains can be very heavy with some systems in South China Sea and Jave sea. These bring very heavy rains. While Singapore copes with the rains due to the excellent drainage systems,Jakarta chokes due to poor drainage and the industrialisation.

  25. hey kea i think it crossed some where andhra tamilnadu border near pulicat and today is sathya sai baba’s birthday.chennaites should remember him for telugu ganga project water supply scheme for chennai.hey kea i think u dont like this but andhra is far better than karnataka.every one should accept this, andhra always gives its hand to help tamilnadu as we all belong to south india and we should unite together and nt quarrel together.frankly karnataka didnt behave good on hogenakkal case and KEA WE THANK GOD AS GODAVARI THE LARGEST RIVER IN SOUTH DOESNT FLOW THROUGH KARNATAKA AND EVEN THOUGH KARNATAKA HAVING SURPLUS WATER SUPPLY THROUGH KRISHNA AND WHY CANT IT RELEASE WATER TO TN FARMERS FROM KAVERI????HOW MUCH WATER DO THEY WANT?

  26. Gopal

Singapore has got excellent drainage facilities as mentioned by you. I think most top metros of the world have them.

But Kea’s argument is even world class cities suffer the same traffic snarls, like here in Chennai during rains and so it is not a big issue, which I think is not true.
They are not brought to stand still like here because there the water does not stagnate. Once the rain stops traffic can resume.

  27. Radhakrishna, read this

On November 7, Jal started weakening. Soon afterward, the IMD reported that Jal weakened into a Cyclonic Storm. Later that day, the JTWC downgraded Jal into a Tropical storm. Late on the same day, the IMD reported that the storm weakened into a Deep Depression. As a deep depression, the system made landfall at Chennai, a few hours later/

  28. The pride of Tamil Nadu Chinna kallar crosses 400cm for this year 🙂

Bad news is that Punalur joins Kochi in the NEM 100cm league , Vellanikara and kottayam would soon follow suit 😐

  29. Super sai

What is the height of your proposed mountain. Rainfall will depend on its height.
Also there is no SW monsoon here.(Western ghats + SWM gives the western coast its abundant rainfall)

So a mountain alone won’t make Chennai a more rainier place than what it is now.

Supersai where are you from and what you do.
How such super question arise to you 😀

  30. Super lalit!
If it’s like western ghats then we wouldn’t get much rainfall from swm but surely we would get lot of rain from low pressures/cyclones/ nem etc.
    ?

  31. Super sai

I am Guna’s college colleague and posting from his machine. I just happened to see this link.

Some other people will answer Ur question. See U later.

    A very nice blogsite.

  32. kea’s prediction became true here in pulicat it rained moderately for about one hour from 4pm….
now its hazy….. bit cooler than normal….

  33. Super Sai, one more idea let us break down this western ghats so rain is not just limited to west coast and it will rain in all other places too..

  34. Richy: ramanan as usual” chennai’ll vaanam megamootathudan irukum, nagarin sila idangalil avva pothu mazhai peiya kudum”…..kalaaaaikuraaaarama……….

  35. blog members ,try to sort out me….This is my million dollar question…y do clouds/sky appear mild orange in colour during rain/raining season? …….

  36. blog members ,try to sort out me….This is my million dollar question…y do clouds/sky appear mild orange in colour during rain/raining season? …….is tat due to effect of sun?

  37. Foreca predicting heavy rains for only 36hrs starting from 25th midnight.but heavy rains also prediction on nov 29th and 30th

  38. According to IMD Ramanan – காற்று அழுத்த தாழ்வு மண்டலம் தென்மேற்கு வங்க கடலில் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளதால் there wlll be heavy rains in the next 24 hours in entire Tamilnadu and sometimes கன மழையும் பெய்யும்

  39. Baroda, Heavy cloud seen in Satellite image, ofcourse it is cloudy here, but not raining heavily… limited to slight drizzle at times., why?

  40. supersai
If chennai had mountains on its west in addition to western ghats chennai would not receive a single drop of rain from the swm. However we may get excess rain of 40 to 50cms during nem .atlast we will endup with the same annual rainfall of 130cms but distributed over a short span of 3 months[oct to nov]
