    He says the NEM time from 01st Oct to 31st Dec, so NEM will withdraw tomorrow.

    How can we take it as declaration based on the date.

    SWM season begins on June 1 as per IMD, whereas the onset of SWM in andaman is 15th May.

    It is a very big lapse in IMD i feel.

    • They are obsessed with western calendar. Remember what we have learned from elders – rains persist through marghazai. That ends Jan 15th. So when they say NEM is over they are just following modern science. Cant blame them.

  31. NEM Season ends on Dec 31st no matter when the monsoon withdraws.

    Somethings of IMD cannot be changed like the 8:30 – 8:30 calculations.

  40. Remnants of tropical storm wukong moving towards bay.It will reach TN later part of this week.
    Tropical cyclone developing to the north east of Madagascar.Its lying in area of decreasing shear and favorable SST.Most of models are developing into a powerful system as it tracks closer to Madagascar.
    There is another area of low pressure close to Diego Garcia.Its currently under unfavorable upper level environment.Any development will be slow now.Its expected to move in a south west direction.System to the north of Madagascar may influence its movement as it will get stronger.

    Cyclone Mitchell is moving into cooler waters so it will weaken rapidly.

    Cyclone Freda could become a cat 4 system soon.

    Good that both the dams are getting very very heavy inflows

    Chennai regions also got good rains, particularly the lake catchment areas.

  54. There is a reason why they call Thamirabharani (not kaveri) “Tamizhagathin vatraatha jeeva nathi”…

    The Thamirabharani catchment areas receive heavy rain during Pre monsoon, south west and north east monsoon from April until January the next year.. Only for the last 4 years, its not been gettin good rain fall due to poor SWM in south kerala becos of which the river was in spate only during NEM for the last few years…

    Tamirabharani is the only river We(TN) can be proud of for having a perennial flow throughout the year… (thought we have other great perennial rivers like koovam 😛 )

  78. Papanasam super rains brings one of old blog members (KN) to the blog

    Papanasam dam had a 10 ft increase in 3 hours is awesome. Its full height is 143 ft The dam is one among the 8 big dams of Tamil Nadu in terms of holding capacity (above 5000 mcft capacity)…..!

    My father from Kanyakumari dt said that the rain drops were very very big and he has not seen anything like this.

  90. Radar continue to pick up lot of thick red and blue lines east of chennai. lines are quite lengthy and even it is noticed about 100KMS in length. Though breadth wise not huge, but if it moves exactly west and possibly chennai and nearby areas would get farily good showers around mid night. that could be the last spell of rains for 2012. The cloud pattern over bay of bengal refelct the fact fact that very strong easterlies prevail over most parts of bay of bengal below 13 north.
