    • heavy rain days since 1960 to 1989 has now become very heavy rains.

good one to note these observations.

also the worrying factor as he said that our drains can hold only 45MM in an hour.

when severe rains lashing chennai has become frequent, corporation has to set up and infra which can hold even 150MM an hour.

  2. Times of India , what a mess up 😛 Instead of reporting city gets heavier amounts of rain in short periods of time, they have mentioned heavier showers, but for shorter amount of time…. lol

  3. T.Nagar/Mahalingapuram rainfall till today.

    0 mm – Jan
    17.6 – Feb
    12.2 – Mar
    9.6 – Apr
    3.9 – May
    39.8 – Jun
    152.4 – Jul
    216.7 – Aug
    208.4 – Sep

    SWM – 617.3
    Year – 660.6

  4. @PJ

Actually, even IMD statement clearly says heavier amounts in lesser amounts of time, i.e 10 mm in 5 mins instead of 10 mm in 10 mins, but TOI has mistaken the statement . It thinks it gets lesser minutes of rain, but higher amounts which is not actually the case 🙂

  5. When did it rain last night?? No signs of any rains here, I could see the stars at around 7:30 pm, but I saw a flash at around 10:45 to the NNE.

  6. @Partha

So the Sholingur one gave some rains to Anna Nagar and areas north of T.Nagar right?? That’s what it looks like seeing PAC

  7. Less than Half hour to go for the close. Anyone can still send in their entries

  8. Rainfall at 08.30AM

Chinnakalar (Coimbatore Dist) 6, Devala (Nilgiris Dist), Valparai pto (Coimbatore Dist) and Naduvattam (Nilgiris Dist) 5 each, Periyar (Theni Dist) and Omalur (Salem Dist) 4 each, Gudalur Bazar (Nilgiris Dist) 3, Valparai taluk office (Coimbatore Dist) and Yercaud (Salem Dist) 2 each and Kuzhithurai (Kanyakumari Dist), Thuckalay (Kanyakumari Dist), Mangalapuram (Namakkal Dist) and Vilupuram (Villupuram Dist) 1 each.

  9. What is this cheap tactic kea ?!!? Anyone can get 2 points by saying 0 mm in the middle of a dry spell in NEM or even after a day of heavy rains in SWM. This is a very very cheap tactic! Only 1 point should be awarded for 0 mm 😛

  10. kea Nunga got 0.5 mm yesterday which is technically is rounded to 1 mm

You have taken 0.5 points for that. If it had rained then how can for 0 mm you can put points for that.

    Logically wrong.

    • What about anna nagar and nearby areas rainfall yesterday night ?

We had some 5 -10 mins of moderate to medium heavy rainfall in Kolathur which is near to Padi.

The category for rain points should be changed. If it rains well in anna nagar or any other area we should take that also into consideration .At least places where IMD has RG installed in City should be considered i think.

For if it rains elsewhere and not Nunga or Meena then all should be given full points

Bloggers what’s the take on this ?

      • Then Nunga and meena rainfall should be considered only when it is above 5 MM or something like that
and not 0.5 MM or trace or less than 5 MM .

Do u agree on this ?

      • from 1 to 6MM we can consider that 5MM difference.

if someone predicts 1MM and if it rains 6MM then that person can be given points as per the rule.

if it is less than 0.5MM then no points,

      • We have Rg readings from various locations in City under IMD . Can’t we get those readings.?
Then how IMD reports the rainfall in those areas when there is heavy rains in those areas like DGP office or Marina, Tambaram, Poonamallee etc

      • Points consideration should be from > 5 mm and steps of 0.1 degree thereafter .

      • Ramesh,

u r not understanding the basic here.

we are predicting only for Nunga and Meena areas, dont worry about rains in other areas.

pls restrict yourself into this contest.

  12. from 26th onwards the wind in ODISHA going to be from NW. So far it is from SE or East.

NW winds will bring dry air, that is why i am saying the final session of rains pouring in Odisha.

I have not got any points when I posted 0 mm entries and it rained which means that there is also possibility for losing

      • Hope so 🙂 But it’ll be heavier in coastal karnataka and ghat areas for a few days…. btw it rained arnd 3-4mm only….

  14. 20-9-2013 ENDING 8:30am Chinnakalar (Coimbatore Dist) 6, Devala (Nilgiris Dist), Valparai pto (Coimbatore Dist) and Naduvattam (Nilgiris Dist) 5 each, Periyar (Theni Dist) and Omalur (Salem Dist) 4 each, Gudalur Bazar (Nilgiris Dist) 3, Valparai taluk office (Coimbatore Dist) and Yercaud (Salem Dist) 2 each and Kuzhithurai (Kanyakumari Dist), Thuckalay (Kanyakumari Dist), Mangalapuram (Namakkal Dist) and Vilupuram (Villupuram Dist) 1 each.

  15. These are stratus/alto based clouds, so don’t expect more than 1 mm rain. We need strong nimbostratus or cumulonimbus

  16. Senthil says–Point point–boring guys…

Well Senthil…The Point is that Pradeep has a point to prove over the points systems. Point is that Kea too has got a point of say in this..The point is to keep the blog active by all these points scoring systems in the blog..Hope you got my point..BTW Senthil, any more points to add in my point blank explanation!!!

    • movement to long distance were not working out for the past couple of days. any localized storm will be fine, today we have to wait and see whether localized one or moving long distance from west

  17. @Partha

Actually, the Bangalore storms were visible at around 5:30 pm in the max-z radar. They survived from Bangalore

  18. What is all this POINTS system controversy? Its everywhere blog, whatsapp, facebook.

I have decided to give my double point away that I got for zero rainfall and half point which I got for 0.5 mm.

It is really unfair, but as usual the blog owner or the host has to compromise.

    • Kea how can you take half a point for 0.5 mm rain. If you had said it will not rain you should not get points even if IMD says “Trace”. Similarly in my view double points should be applicable only for getting the right amount of rainfall not when you predict there would be no rainfall. It is difficult to predict the exact quantity of rain than predicting no rainfall when Chennai would on an average have 2 out of 3 days as no rains day on most occasions

  19. Atleast Anna Nagar West is only the Agumbe of Chennai. Don’t say that to COLA, as they are predicting the Chennai-Cherrapunjee competition which is going to neck to neck to be won by Chennai
