    • Sailu, the road flooding is partially due to high intensity rains in a short time..Today the it rained for about one hour 20 mins ..Early friday morning it rained almost 3 hours at a steady pace..Hence the flooding was less..

      Wednesday 4th September:
East Coast trough strengthens with a vortex forming off the coast of AP/Northern TN. Rainfall increases along TN coast regions. Thundershowers prevail in interior Karnataka around Bangalore.

Chennai: Rain intensity increasing, heavy in many parts of city. Average rainfall amont around 25-30 mms.

Mumbai: Morning will be cloudy, with some rains ( Large Drops) falling in the Eastern suburbs.
Outer townships in the East can also get some moderate morning showers.
      Pune: Thundery developments by evening.

Delhi NCR: (Wednesday and Thursday): Partly cloudy, clearing by evening. Mostly dry and warm at around 37c.
      Kolkata: Thunder showers by evening.
Temperatures rise more in Central Pakistan to 42/43c.

      Thursday 5th September:
Heavy rainfall increases in Orissa and adjoining Bengal.
In South, rains decrease, but are prevalent in Interior Karnataka. Several storms from Interior TN drift towards coast, and Chennai will see some showers by evening.

      • cant say the rainfall amount excatly :P..i dont know how they say “Rainfall will be in the range of 25-35 mm”..For cyclones we can predict the range by seeing TRMM given by satellite but for the thunderstorms caused by heat its difficult to predict the range in advance..

You are 3-5 km away from Chennai Airport observatory, so the rainfall figures will differ 99% of the time, but >15 mm difference is extremely rare and it’s one of those days. Similarly, there’ll be a day your areas will get drizzles and Airport record 1 cm.

  3. How close and accurate one can get. Its 58mm in my (La Cheeka Rg). Padi n Anna Nagar west are just 1km away and almost the same figures. Efficient consistent performance by our RG.

  10. Southwest monsoon accounted for 98 pc rains between June, August -The Hindu

The southwest monsoon, which accounted for the country’s 98 per cent rainfall between June and August, is expected to continue the momentum this month as it enters its last phase.
Rainfall for the country during September is likely to be “normal” at 96 per cent, the Indian Meteorological Department says in its long range forecast
Attributing the normal rainfall to the absence of El Nino phenomenon, the met department said the actual rainfall received between June and August has been good for the country as a whole especially in central India where the rainfall has been 128 per cent of the long period average.
“The good precipitation is due to absence of El Nino,” chief forecaster for the monsoon D S Pai said.

According to the department, “Rainfall over the country as a whole for September is likely to be 96 per cent of the long period average.”
Rainfall received across the country was 98 per cent between June and August 31, it said.

The met department had issued operational long range forecasts for the southwest monsoon season (June to September) rainfall on April 26 and June 14.

Monsoon is crucial for the kharif crops such as rice, soyabean, cotton and maize as almost 60 per cent of the farm land in the country is rainfed.
DG of IMD L S Rathore had earlier said that El Nino, an ocean current which influences the monsoon pattern in India, is also neutral and “not going to have any adverse affect on the monsoon circulation”.

In a statement yesterday, the Met Department said while the actual rainfall received across the country between June and August has been 110 per cent, central India had 128 per cent rainfall and North West India 121 per cent rainfall.

North East, which usually receives heavy rainfall, however, recorded 72 per cent rainfall during this period, the Met Department said.
