Yeah, but will be better if we get the brunt of the storms.
Today also it is the stretch south of Tambaram that is going to get the major portion of the rains. Core city might again miss out with some sample rains given for Nunga I suppose
Was just seeing the 3 hour animation on the GIS maps, the storm simply ignores Chennai city, it does not cross Alandur. In fact by the time it crosses Sriperumbudhur it has already losts all of its strength
Here is sp koil we did not get much rain yesterday we had two spells one around 9 pm and another at midnight. both lasted for short period only will hope the next one will last at least one hour.
@Kea– while the TS and Federer are desirable..yr question of INR should have been ” will the Indian rupee get stronger today”..then all 3 are in the same quotient
not possible for rupee to bounce back, it could breach 70 today.
Rupee is certainly not breaching 70, it has actually staged a survival atleast for today
The chief amounts of rainfall (2 cm or
more) recorded at 1730 hours IST of today are:
Dharmshala6; Tehri5; Haldia, Una and Vishakhapatnam4
each; Kolkata, Bhagalapur, Bilaspur, Diamond Harbour and Mandya3 each; Mukteshwar, Champa, Canning
and Najibabad, Midnapore, Guwahati and Behraich2 each.
Raijin, I think you forgot August 14 th Rains..That day was really good with the entire city getting decent rainfall..To a large extent July and August have been good in terms of the averages being maintained ..Yes, Last 8 days of August have been dry and this was expected..And to add the guys who have lost August contest ..Most of them had predicted 120 mm to 135mm..
The low pressure area over Jharkhand and
neighbourhood now lies over east Uttar Pradesh
and adjoining Bihar and north Chhattisgarh with
associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending
upto midtropospheric levels tilting southwestwards
with height.
The axis of monsoon trough passes through
Amritsar, Meerut, Kanpur, centre of low pressure,
Bankura, Haldia and thence southeastwards to
eastcentral Bay of Bengal.
The low pressure area over east Uttar Pradesh
and adjoining Bihar, northeast Madhya Pradesh and north
Chhattisgarh with associated upper air cyclonic circulation
extending upto midtropospheric levels tilting
southwestwards with height persists.
You see the radar animation..it looks like oil on water, the way Chennai got byepass on the top and bottom. They say fact is always stranger than fiction.
Thought we would have a respite, with a cool wind blowing in the morning. Lets hope atleast the heat creates enough disturbance for a TS or two in the evening, otherwise its going to be a long uncomfortable weekend.
Hi Bloggers…was in the road between 10am and now..it is a blistering hot day..blue skies..can really test the highs today..saw Guindy and and Saidapet areas wet with yday night rains
Yesterday was the first thunder i heard after May 2013…Signals september is just 2 days away…So expect such heavy downpours with big thunders and lightning…Anything is possible..it can rain any time of the day…100mm is even possible in an hour…Hope pondicherry’s August fortunes turns towards chennai in september..
Kar- Thats what i had posted few hours back..When we expect the least,it rains and the opposite happens when we wait with bated breath…20mm in about 15 mins!!! very good RR..
Yeah, Cheeka, Saw your post and with great hope i was searching for the blue spot with a lens..couldn’t find though..Hopefully i don’t require a lens next time..Think it will be big enough..
Probably the hottest day of the month by the looks of it..Kar–Check the max temps this month..
The chief amounts of rainfall (4 cm or more) recorded at 0830 hours IST of today are:

Tehri, Satna and Pondicherry5 each and Diamond Harbour, Haldia, Madurai, Salem, Waltair,

Heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places
over east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, SubHimalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh,
Assam & Meghalaya, east Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu.
30 August:
Heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places over
east Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Tamilnadu.
31 August:
Heavy rainfall would occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh,
Assam & Meghalaya and Tamilnadu.
You know the conditions of our roads!! Even if it did rain well, Madhavaram which is 4-5 km away wouldn’t record the same rainfall!!Even my house and Nungambakkam (1.5 km away) always record different amounts.
Gud morning bloggers
Radar shows huge trail of storm extending from north to south
Hope kea’s expectancy of 5mm can be easily gettable as of now as per radar
Kea add the radar image also with the topic
Oh My god. Look at the radar,
Chennai cannot expect much. Few mm is sure
Storm is still developing. We will have to wait it out.
Going by the radar animation the cuddalore and karaikal stretch would have received the brunt from the storms
Still they are getting with storms are bigger
Chengalpet to Cuddalore stretch battered.
Storm
How r u? You are active in last few days after a long break
Supera irukken sir. How are you?
Tokyo la mazhaiya?
Nothing special here. Usually we get only boring rains only
But on 22nd area where I am living got very very high intensity rains for 1 hour. Easily 10 cm is possible
But when checked nearby aws readings it showed just 12mm. The aws is. 7 kms far from my area
Oh, wow. 10 cms in 1 hour is a treat to watch.
The one to the direct west is heading down south. Our best bet is the one NW to us.
Both storms are developing rapidly.
The sto to the west of chennai is sure for the chengalpet and Pondicherry stretch as per the radar animation
Going by the bearing of both storms they would merge at some point for sure.
The storm line originated from Cudappah to Salem, a distance of about 350 kms.
Anyway, the one near Tirupati at the 100km radius looks good for us.
Okay…
Complete cloud cover down south.
http://www.imd.gov.in/section/satmet/dynamic/insatsector-irc.htm
NW one is heading south. 😐
Orange tinted sky.
Think even it moves south it will chennai I hope
Yeah, but will be better if we get the brunt of the storms.
Today also it is the stretch south of Tambaram that is going to get the major portion of the rains. Core city might again miss out with some sample rains given for Nunga I suppose
Heading direct west to east. Possible to get nothing for the city. Ahh.
The position of the bigger storm is exactly like yesterday nights’ strange but looks like Kea would not get his 5 mm today also
Was just seeing the 3 hour animation on the GIS maps, the storm simply ignores Chennai city, it does not cross Alandur. In fact by the time it crosses Sriperumbudhur it has already losts all of its strength

North of Minjur is in for a battering
Here is sp koil we did not get much rain yesterday we had two spells one around 9 pm and another at midnight. both lasted for short period only will hope the next one will last at least one hour.
thiruvottiyur, ennore, central, parrys, icf, perambur going to get some shower.
Yes it rained here in Kolathur area today morning between 7 am and 8 am..
Some decent rain….
Rare good day for India in tennis singles
Somdev won his first round in 5 sets
And Rajeev Ram trashed his opponent, though he is American, he has his traits in India
Disappointing start to the day.
Looking forward to an evening of activity, though.
Kea will surely get his 5 mm. Haha.
5-20 mm in next 60 hours will do it
Interior TN and adjoining interior Karnataka get thunder showers. Possibility of these showers drifting into Chennai by evening.
– Vagaries
@KEA– yes, somdev made our day..Saina eclipsed Schenk yday night..a TS tonight will lighten the economy gloom
Will the Indian Rupee touch 70 today, will Chennai get lucky with TS this evening and finally can Federer survive another day.
A lot to look forward to today.
Good Morning KEA,
unanswerable questions.
Good morning guys
@Kea– when is our pre-NEM meet..can we target 7th sept-4pm at uthandi ( the place you had zeroed on)?

Cola Today
based on yesterdays TS, i thought 4-5CM but nothing only 15 minutes of moderate rains.
Both the 9pm TS and the early morning TS dissipated at it reached the coast..Hence interiors got very good numbers..
You see the radar animation..it looks like oil on water, the way Chennai got byepass on the top and bottom. They say fact is always stranger than fiction.
Touched 34C today.
Thought we would have a respite, with a cool wind blowing in the morning. Lets hope atleast the heat creates enough disturbance for a TS or two in the evening, otherwise its going to be a long uncomfortable weekend.
When I looked at the radar yesterday, I thought KAR’s residence will surely get atleast 100 mm. Seems like it didn’t rain what the radar promised.
In fact not even half of that.
once it has started moving faster from Kanchi, it has started dissipating, so we did not get that much except 15 minutes moderate rain.
The funny thing about these TS is that when we expect the least to come our way.it pours in buckets….Its the other way when we wait with bated breath…
It started losing steam even before it crossed Sri Perumbudhur
kanchi recorded 2MM only
Pradeep’s post shows 24mm..Is it 2 or 24?
as per AWS it is 2, lets wait for 2.30PM update from Chennai.

Hi Bloggers…was in the road between 10am and now..it is a blistering hot day..blue skies..can really test the highs today..saw Guindy and and Saidapet areas wet with yday night rains
Nothing like torrential drizzles to mess the next day up with high humidity AND blistering heat. Sometimes, its better if it does not rain in Chennai
It rained for a max of 15mins yesterday…Tambaram comes up with 20mm!!..The intensity! 😮
absolutely surprising
Yesterday was the first thunder i heard after May 2013…Signals september is just 2 days away…So expect such heavy downpours with big thunders and lightning…Anything is possible..it can rain any time of the day…100mm is even possible in an hour…Hope pondicherry’s August fortunes turns towards chennai in september..
It’s a record August for Pondi with 38cm….It has bettered Nungambakkam’s record August of 37cm in 2011…
Karthik,
Pondy was breaking all records, some more left in NEM .
Honestly i wasnt even expecting a drop yesterday….20mm is a bonus!
but still less than the expected 50mm
Kar- Thats what i had posted few hours back..When we expect the least,it rains and the opposite happens when we wait with bated breath…20mm in about 15 mins!!! very good RR..
who expected 50mm ?
The first spot of blue near Chittoor
That has gone without trace in the next radar update, has to be a great omen for today
Yeah, Cheeka, Saw your post and with great hope i was searching for the blue spot with a lens..couldn’t find though..Hopefully i don’t require a lens next time..Think it will be big enough..

Hi Partha,
What’s the latest update on weather front in TN ?
just now i have updated forecast till 31st
IMD have forecasted HEAVY rain till 01st Sep for TamilNadu.
yes, i told this on Sunday, do u remember?
Humdity is 70%
Some decent chance for Central Madras. SRI looks good.
Already it is cloudy in Kolathur . It can rain anytime i think. What’s ur opinion ?
@ NOVAKNOLE ,
Did it rain in your area this morning ?
Storms not moving, so big problem for us!
Can u give the rainfall figures for morning rainfall in Chennai ?
Tambaram – 2 cm
Chennai AP – 0.1 mm
Nungambakkam – trace
What abt Madhavaram and adj. areas ?
We had some decent rainfall today morning…
Did it rain in your area this morning ?
nope, nothing in the morning
If the storms extend west over us, we’ll be in for 50 mm+
Which are the areas will get benefited if the TS comes over today ?
its almost stationary, so can’t say much
WNW looks ominous.
Madhavaram 1 mm
It is ridiculous. Here in Kolathur many roads were filled with water.
Then how will it be 1 MM
You know the conditions of our roads!! Even if it did rain well, Madhavaram which is 4-5 km away wouldn’t record the same rainfall!!Even my house and Nungambakkam (1.5 km away) always record different amounts.
WHAT TO DO ????
@partha
IMD have announced an UAC over Sri Lanka.
Will it be useful for TN ?.
That’s the reason we aren’t getting any rains 😦 It’s preventing westerly flow!!
HUGE tower to the west!!
@SUSA,
Which Tower ” EIFFEL TOWER ” or LEANING TOWER OF PISA ”
Just Kidding.. Take it easy …..
lol 😛 Burj Khalifa. I like jokes and don’t take things seriously 😀
CAN WE EXPECT SOME DECENT RAINFALL OVER THE NEXT 2 – 3 DAYS AS IMD HAVE FORECASTED HEAVY RAIN TILL 01st SEP MORNING. ?
ARE U IN HOME ?
Rame-Yes the music starts from today. We shud get rains starting today.
Hope it turns out to be a bumper …..
01st to 05th September
Punjab, Haryana, west Rajasthan,
Gujarat and Marathawada where
weather would be mainly dry
CAN WE EXPECT SOME DECENT RAINFALL OVER THE NEXT 2 – 3 DAYS AS IMD HAVE FORECASTED HEAVY RAIN TILL 01st SEP MORNING. ?
COASTAL DISTRICTS or INTERIOR TN . WHICH WILL GET BENEFITTED FROM THE SYSTEM ?
Will the system get strength and give decent rainfall or it will move westwards?
The 2005 BIG rainfall was caused by a system which developed in Gulf of Mannar and adj. areas I think..
Is that right ?
OMG!!! Overshooting top to the NW 😯 😮
WHAT IS BURJ KHALIFA ????
The world’s tallest building aka Burj Dubai!!
YOUR IQ IS BRILLIANT…….
lol 😛 thanks!
Some ominous looking SRI near Ambattur hope it moves west towards the city
It’s not moving at all!
@SRIKANTH
DID UR AREA RECEIVE RAIN THIS MORNING ?
Nothing in the morning very light drizzle for a few seconds around 7:30 thats all
Here in Kolathur some moderate rainfall was realised.
Super prediction Partha sir! But problem is, SWM flow is weak, so storms will struggle to reach us
@rame
OMG!! You have no idea about 2005!! About 10 LPA or depressions hit Tamil Nadu that year!!! No system went to the Gulf of Mannar
WOW . I took interest in Weather Info only after Cyclone Thane. -2011
I took interest from a cyclone too!! Jal!
Storms not moving at all!! 😦 😦
