      • KEA,

Then we had excess of 150% rainfall during NEM.

Since we have a forecast of EL Nino & IOD favourable from September, we should have the same situation this time too??

      • @partha-Everybody is hoping for 2005 to happen again..Don’t know how good or bad will be El nino , IOD will be..Only time will tell. One thing is for sure and I do not want to sound pessimistic, NEM 2013 should not fail for many reasons..If it fails, we will have some serious issues starting Jan 2014.

    • oops..gosh…my my…are these numbers for real? Can PJ corroborate these numbers and also furnish rain amounts in and around Uttarakhand..my sympathies with the people who suffered / are suffering..this is catastrophical and cannot be simplified as manmade..it is nature’s fury compounded by Human Greed

      • @ Gopal666, you hit the nail on its head..human greed is the sole reason and nature in all its fury teaches a lesson..Are we learning any lessons from these sad events!!! Look at places like Ooty, kodai n other hill stations in our country. Can bet you that more than 50% account for illegal constructions ..

  3. Sholayar nearby Valparai is the only place to get continuous rains from June 1st. Excluding June 2nd when it got 20 mm. I has got above 30 mm rains in all 21 days. Total till today is 1116 mm

      • PJ– do you have rainfall amounts in other places of Uttarakhand..my guess is that upper reaches beyond Kedarnath where cloudbursts would have happened did not have any stations to record rains

      • @Joel, we don’t need nature’s fury..That would be a disaster. We just need a minimum of 120cms or more of rainfall this NEM.Remember in 2005, we did not have any cyclone etc..Was just D and DD and we were lucky to get about 210 cms from NEM alone.

  5. @all,

Please don’t draw any co-realtions between SWM and NEM rainfall in Chennai…..Infact all of these four combinations have happened regularly….

    1.Good SWM – Good NEM (like 1996,2011)
    2.Bad SWM – Bad NEM (like 2012)
    3.Bad SWM – Good NEM(Like 2005)
    4.Good SWM – Bad NEM (like 2007)

Drawing conclusions without any scientific reasoning and just statistical relations isn’t good prediction!

  8. Thanks P.john….i too had that doubt..how it will be 4020mm ( in 15 hrs)..

    i m shocked to see…that a 60cm rain created a huge flood like that…which was like a wall of waters ..like tsunami…

its a Man-made disaster —blocked all the ways where the water will be flowing thru & constructed houses, cut the mountains & laid roads..

Nature will win against Man’s brainy mind & money-minded…its showed it again ..

    A lesson to all Hill stations…ALERT NOW…

  9. Maddy..enaku oru doubtu..

Recently, u have bn saying that temp has to subside for the sea breeze to set in..but for years we hav bn seeing the onset of sea breeze reducing the temp..Kea also raised the same question..hope u hvn’t answered him..

    Sollunga Maddy..sollunga..sollunga Maddy..sollunga..dishyum..dishyum..

  15. some new info read about TC:

A tropical cyclone is a rotational low pressure system in tropics when the central pressure falls by 5 to 6 hPa from the surrounding and maximum sustained wind speed reaches 34 knots (about 62 kmph). It is a vast violent whirl of 150 to 800 km, spiraling around a centre and progressing along the surface of the sea at a rate of 300 to 500 km a day.The word cyclone has been derived from Greek word “cyclos” which means coiling of a snake. The word cyclone was coined by Heary Piddington who worked as a Rapporteur in Kolkata during British rule. The terms “hurricane” and “typhoon” are region specific names for a strong “tropical cyclone”. Tropical cyclones are called Hurricanes over the Atlantic Ocean and Typhoons over the Pacific Ocean.

Tropical Cyclone can be compared to a heat engine. The energy input is from warm water and humid air over tropical oceans. Release of heat is through condensation of water vapour to water droplets/rain. Only a small percentage (3%) of this released energy is converted into Kinetic energy to maintain cyclone circulation (windfield). A mature cyclone releases energy equivalent to that of 100 hydrogen bombs.
