Barring the 4 days of over 35 C, March has been pleasant for Chennai. Temps have been hovering between 31 and 33 while previous years we used to cross 35 by this time of the year.

    Cherrapunji continued to be battered by some exceptionally heavy rains 32cm on Saturday and 46 cm on Sunday.

    Other Heavyweights such as Passighat & Dibrugarh 5cm each, Silchar 4cm, North Lakhimpur 3cm also got moderate rains. An extended forecast valid until Friday said that scattered rain or thundershowers would continue to occur over the Northeastern States and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

    Japan may need five years to rebuild from the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that has caused up to $235 billion of damage, the World Bank has said.

    The March 11 disaster, which killed more than 8,600 people and left more than 12,800 missing, and ravaged northeastern Japan will likely shave up to 0.5 percentage point from the country’s economic growth this year, the bank said in a report. The impact will be concentrated in the first half of the year, it said.

    “Damage to housing and infrastructure has been unprecedented,” the World Bank said. “Growth should pick up though in subsequent quarters as reconstruction efforts, which could last five years, accelerate.

    Hail forms on condensation nuclei such as dust, insects, or ice crystals, when supercooled water freezes on contact. Hailstones are usually from the size of a pea to the size of a golfball.

    In clouds containing large numbers of supercooled water droplets, these ice nuclei grow quickly at the expense of the liquid droplets because the saturation vapor pressure over ice is slightly less than the saturation vapor pressure over water.

    If the hailstones grow large enough, latent heat released by further freezing may melt the outer shell of the hailstone. The growth that follows, usually called wet growth, is more efficient because the liquid outer shell allows the stone to accrete other smaller hailstones in addition to supercooled droplets. These winds hold the rain and freeze it.

    As the process repeats, the hail grows increasingly larger. Once a hailstone becomes too heavy to be supported by the storm’s updraft it falls out of the cloud. When a hailstone is cut in half, a series of concentric rings, like that of an onion, is revealed. These rings reveal the total number of times the hailstone had traveled to the top of the storm before falling to the ground.

  86. An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on Monday hit Kashmir valley, prompting people to rush out of buildings fearing repeat of the 2005 tremor which devastated several border areas of the valley.

    The tremor with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan occurred around 3.20pm and lasted for three seconds, MeT officials said.

    The jolt was felt in almost all parts of the valley including Srinagar.

    There was no report of any damage due to the tremor, officials said.

    Tremors were also felt in parts of Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Jaipur.

    Tremors felt in Himachal Pradesh

    Tremors were felt in several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday after an earthquake hit the Hindukush region, an official said.

    However, there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property in the hill state.

    “Mild tremors were felt in several parts of Shimla, Kangra and Chamba districts at 3.20pm,” RS Negi posted at the Central Recording Station of Seismology Network at Naddi near Dharamsala said.

    Australia will head into their “mini—final” quarterfinal match against India with a “no—fear” attitude as the pressure of playing at home would be on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men, feels coach Tim Nielsen.
