  2. South TN has done well last night. Ramanathapuram district has done exceedingly well. Avg over 50 cm rains.

Would augment flows in lower Vaigai.

  3. KEA
I had taken some liberties with English– I had meant frills– meaning while interiors and Delta will get the core / best rains,we will get the remains / leftovers / frills..

  4. both satellite and radar latest readings are encouraging signs for rains to spread towards chennai. might be possible from to night. about 200 KMS south east of chennai already raining.

  6. @Radhakrishna

I was told that Araku could be the highest broad gauge railway station in South India… but guess what Hassan and Bangalore cantonment railway stations are higher than Araku 🙂

    Bangalore Cantonment -929m
    Hassan- 952m
    Araku -924m

Did u expect this surprise from south interior Karnataka? 🙂

Karnataka has one of the highest average elevations in the country

  7. Ooty and Kodaikanal are truly mighty… We dont realise their value and see them low when compared to north indian hill stations… check out the altitudes for yourselves and appreciate the reality 🙂

    North Indian hill stations
    —————————-
    Shimla 2086m
    Darjeeling 2077m
    Naineetal 1938m
    Srinagar 1592m
    Manali 1950m
    Kulu 1362m

    Ooty 2209m

  8. KN, I was born in a place called hubli in karnataka. 75% of karnataka has weather similar to bangalore due to elevation…only the coast from karwar to mangalore and areas around bellary and raichur are warm.

  9. Radhakrishna
Tks for the info on Araku..How do I take the train? From Vizag?

    Karthik N
Good info on hill station altitudes..an eye opener.tks..how high is yelagiri?

  10. Omg…. Ramanathapuram district a complete wash out… top headlines in ndtv

Manadapam recorded the maximum rainfall of 207 mm, followed by Pampan 157.6 mm, Thangachimadam 142 mm, Rameswaram 108 mm, Kamuthi 42 mm, Ramanathapuram 85.6 mm and Tiruvadanai 69 mm

  11. hey karthick narayan ya araku might be 5 metres less than elevation of bangalore contonment and hassan but see araku is a VALLEY MEANS IT HAS LESS ELEVATION BUT TRAIN REACHES AS HIGH AS ABOVE 1000 METERS HIGH BEFORE APPROACHING ARAKU BUT AS ARAKU IS A VALLEY THE HEIGHT DRAMATICALLY DECREASES AND KARTHIK U KNOW THERE ARE MANY RAILWAY CROSSINGS NEAR ARAKU VALLEY AND BORRA CAVEAS AND THERE U KNOW SHOCKINGLY U HAVE TO WAIT FOR TRAIN TO PASS THROUGH CROSSING ON A HIGHLY VERTICALLY SLOPED DOWN ROAD AND EVERYONE HAS TO APPLY HAND BRAKE OTHERWISE THEY WILL FALL DOWN THE ROAD AND CANT CROSS RAILWAY TRACK.IF U HAVE TIME JUST VISIT ARAKU AND IS AVERY INTERESTING EPISODE AND KARTHIK VIJAYAWADA CHENNAI RAILWAY ROUTE MIGHT BE BORING BUT ITS FULL OF LUSH GREEN PADDY FIELDS MAKING IT THE RICE BOWL OF ENTIRE INDIA.AND VIJAYAWADA VIZAG ROUTE STILL MORE GREENY AND VERY LUSH PADDY FIELDS AND GODAVARI RIVER IN BETWEEN FULL OF WATER AND HAVE U BEEN TO COASTAL ANDHRA TRAIN ROUTE ANY TIME?

  12. @Gopal yelagiri is a bit of surprise.. its a small hill station near a village like town called tirupattur… its altitude is suprisingly high..1400m.. we can reach the top very soon.. quite place..nothing much to see though

  13. Yes Radhakrishna i had the opportunity to go in the famous coramandel express and also in howrah mail… i just noticed that godavri carries more volume of water and more brown in color… it was an ok route.. as i went in the summer.. it was scorching hot near places lik ongole, rajamundry… so i dint lik it except the 2 rivers…

anyways i liked vishakapatnam a lot.. beautiful city with a wonderful landscape and great ppl …

but i strongly recommend u to go in the mangalore-madgaon passenger and chennai-mangalore mail it is phenomenally great…. rocks… 🙂

  14. wow..luk at the radar…huge mass of steady moving clouds approaching us! 🙂 rains from evening and will continue for a long time!

  15. The blue dots in the doppler are of no use. it can only bring overcast weather we need either white line or yellow or red lines which are too far away almost near cuddalore. So rains are ruled out at least till night.

    any other opinion??

    ss.

  16. yes. for the past one hour not much sunshine but still this is not thickly overcast.

but might develop towards evening, and the cloud pattern in south est bay if it maintains the same trend, drizzling might commence after 7 PM. Clouds are slowly moving north east and then slowly south west. so chennai would be covered under cloud belt by 5 PM. let us see.

    ss.

  17. YA KARTHIK NARAYAN there is a passenger train from visakhapatnam to kirandul a place in chattisgarh and that passenger departs vizag at 6.50am in the morning and arrives araku at 10.50am and so long journey through cool climate and many tunnels.and u came to coastal andhra in SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IT IS UNBEARABLE HEAT HERE IN COASTAL ANDHRA AND U KNOW I HAVE EXPERIENCED EVEN 55-60 DEGREES TEMPERATURE IN VIJAYAWADA.THATS WHY I CAN LIVE EVEN IN THE DESERT ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD.BUT IN SUMMER KRISHNA AND GODAVARI MIGHT HAVE BEEN DRIED UP BUT KRISHNA RIVER TRAIN BRIDGE LIES ON DOWNSTREAM OF PRAKASAM BARRAGE AND SO U CAN SEE WATER UNDER RAILWAY BRIDGE ONLY IF WATER IS RELEASED FROM PRAKASAM BARRAGE,BUT COROMANDEL EXPRESS IS VERY FAMOUS TRAIN IN ANDHRA AS COAST ALONG BAY OF BENGAL FROM KRISHNA DISTRICT TO TAMILNADU IS CALLED COROMANDEL COAST.HEY KARTHIK MY BRO STAYS IN BANGALORE BTM LAYOUT,HE OFTEN TELL ME TO SETTLE IN BLORE AS ITS ALWAYS COOL AND FRANKLY SAYING HE IS ANTI CHENNAI AS HE SAYS ITS ALWAYS HOT EVEN THOUGH HE STAYED IN CHENNAI FOR MORE THAN 3 YEARS AND EVEN MY CHITTHI STAYS IN GUINDY BUT I DIDNT FEEL THAT MUCH HEAT IN CHENNAI AS I AM FROM VIJAYAWADA WHICH IS 100 TIMES HOTTER THAN CHENNAI AND SEVERE HEAT ALONG COASTAL ANDHRA BELT HELPS IN CREATION OF CYCLONES LIKE LAILA AND I THINK EVERYONE KNOW WHAT CYCLONE LAILA CREATED IN ONGOLE WITH A RAINFALL OF 55CMS.YA ONGOLE,VIJAYAWADA AND RAJAHMUNDRY ARE VERY HOT AN DI STILL DONNO THE REASON IF IT RAINS HERE IT WILL BE GOOD ELSE HORRIBLE EXCEPT IN DECEMBER.IN SUMMER 40 DEGREES IS MINIMUM FOR US AND THATS WHY I ALWAYS APPRECIATE CYCLONE LAILA WHICH PLUMMETTED TEMPERATURES DOWN TO 24 DEGREES FOR A WEEK THIS SUMMER

  18. @ Kea

No bets with rain. Your 4 pm forecast may work today.

    Rains are near Kalpakkam now.

Suresh have a look at SRI in radar, rains are not that far away as Cuddalore. They are around 60-70 km from us.

  19. YA KEA REALLY SORRY FOR SENDING WRONG LINK NEVER COMMIT THAT MISTAKE ACTUALLY I AM A TENNIS FAN AND I AM WATCHING THAT MATCH HIGHLIGHTS 2010 AUSTRALIAN OPEN AS ITS HOLIDAYS FOR ME AND I WAS TRYING TO SEND SOME OTHER LINK BUT UNFORTUNATELY THIS LINK CAME

  20. Suresh

The surface rainfall intensity radar picks up rainfall intensity over a place isn’t it?

The explanation is given in the chart accompanying the radar.

Dark blue dots means rainfall intensity between 1-7.6 mm/hr .

So definitely some rains are falling near Kalpakkam. I am not a weather expert. Only people living there near Kalpakkam or experts in our forum can give further details.

  21. @ Kea
Rainfall amounts could easily be higher – I expect the spell to last for a few hours.
Coastal parts of delta are having continous rains for 6 hours now. And this round of rains is so typical of NEM, coastal areas are getting battered with dramatic reducation in rainfall amounts as you move inland – this is coming out clearly in TNAU aws website.

    Siva

  22. Mr. guna,

Thanks for your explanations. I had also seen that and your explanations are quite correct. however please note rainfall of less than one centimeter within one hour is insignificant. any way let us hope at least chennai get that from this wave from this night at least.

    ss.

  23. Karthik,

Yes the journey in mangalore-madgaon passenger is truly divine. Even during non monsoon season its beautiful to look at. The train passes through beautiful landscape dotted with rolling hills and rivers of all sizes. Beyond udupi there are these huge rivers lazily winding down to meet sea.
In you go during SW monsoon the whole journey would be accompanied by rain.
To the east you can see distant western ghats covered in clouds and to the west tall tress interrupted by sudden rivers and streams.

  24. KEA.

This huge rain bearing cloud mass for nearly 150 KMS in length and breadth slowly moving up towards kalpakkam and also might cover chennai before 7 Pm. Now chennai is overcast mor thick for the past half an hour or so with low black clouds moving from north east.

Will it not signify a pressure distrubance in north coastal tamil nadu. could be.

i heard rain stopped both in cuddalore and nagai districts as it was some what heavy between 10 AM and 1 PM. Pamban has recorded heaviest of 16 centimeters of rainfall and whole of ramnad very useful rains.

    SS.

  25. kea.

u r so confident that rains at least drizzles reach us by 5 PM. But it looks like from radar readings there is a steaday spread of rain clouds for the past 3 hours towards north . let us see.

probably very close to the coast a pressure disturbance would have developed as we could see thick overcast skies for the past 2 hours at chennai.
    ss.

  26. KEA.

Surface rain fall intensity diagram shows lot of encouragement. now the showers are just east of mahabalipuram in the open sea. if the same trend continues, may be with in 2 hours, chenai would get few drizzling. So 6 Pm, showers might commence.

    ss.

  27. Latest sat pictures looks ominous.

It seems clouds are moving slowly now, than it was at the morning.

Any way definite rains for us today, is on the cards and the Topic “RAIN COULD START BY TONIGHT” is bang on target.

  28. As per accuweather

The rains starting today will stay put for some days and won’t clear up as was the case during earlier rains this season. (Only if accuweather forecasts are accurate)

  29. there will be heavy rush hour traffic today. Its going to pour by 6 and I have to go to Sterling road at 7. Normally takes me 30-45 minutes during peak traffic hours for a distance that can be covered in less than 5 minutes.
If it rains this will be easily more than a hour. Thanks to traffic heading towards anna nagar and rain.

  30. in the last 20 minutes drizzling sprad to more than 20 KMS as per surface rainfall diagram. In that case around 6 Pm, chennai would be in for mild drizzle.

the rains maintain east, north east and then towards south west. still major part of rains in open sea.

it is intersting to see these diagram once in 10 minutes, as good progress right from noon.

    ss.

  31. showers now reached near Muttukadu. just 50 KMS from chennai port. it is strange the rains are quite longer in breadth than length and more than 3/4th in the open sea. this would mean longer the rainfall once it is covered. always better to have more breadth than length which can also bring heavy in nature as sea can induce intensity if it moves from east.

    ss.

  32. this is a very very slow moving system..thatz y heavy rains for long duration in the south..hope it moves slowly tonite over chennai also!

  33. i really hope this spell could be the heaviest for this season so far. The cloud is quite larger breadth and also quite intense. Not only the longer durations but also intensity would be high.

I presume about 10 to 15 centimeters of rainfall with in 36 hours.

    ss.

  34. I could see only overcast sky, there is no nimbus cloud, hence BBC forecast may be right, let us not expect much from this

  35. Bhaskaran

forecasts can never work up to the mark but radar is current and hence it won’t fail too many times.

So don’t lose hope. Radar is just like an extension of our normal eyesight.
It helps us to see things which are beyond our normal vision range.

Forecasts as we know are not given on seeing the current factors but based on readings from some 6 hours back at least.

so chances of not raining today is less than 1 %
