  1. At least two models – the Global Forecasting System of the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the NCEP’s own precipitation outlook – suggested that the system may enter the Tamil Nadu coast and track north along the coast until Chennai and neighbourhood before heading into the Bay of Bengal.

This could bring another round of rains along not just coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal but also along the west coast as the moisture-laden easterlies get influenced by westerlies, says the NCEP.

    exactly what i said yesterday

    • I had just now seen 5.30 AM satellite position which clearly reflect the fact that huge cloud mass gatering over south east of chennai. Srilanka is quite clear and only sea portion above nagapattinam to pondy did show huge cloud mass. It is quite apparent the pressure disturbance slowly stretching in to south west bay of north tamil nadu coast. Possibly with in 3 hours the rains might come back to coastal areas of north tamil nadu.

We can expect heavy spells if it moves slightly north west. let us see. possibilities are quite high.

The members may please enlighten why there is a rainfall difference shown by this KEA site and IMD site. IMD says the rainfall till 8.30 PM was 71.6 where as KEA says only 61.6 MM till 12 mid night. Always both never match as far as daily rainfall is concerned. IS this KEA not situates in Chennai Nungambakkam. There were some rains after 8.30 PM also yesterday, and IMD may end up with 80 MMs of rain whereas KEA maintains only 61.

I leave it to the forum for clarifications. In fact i did raised a doubt to KEA authorities, but they are not giving meaningful explanations for their measurment.

      Suresh from Kodambakkam.

      • Suresh,
I am the owner of this site.
Just for your clarification there can be differences in rainfall measurement even for a short distance, sometimes even street.
For a PWS, it is normal for it to show aroud 2-3 mm less for every 25 mm or so.

These values should be used just for guidlines, they can never be 100% accurate.

      • Thank you my dear friend. As a owner of this site, you are doing an excellent service to the society, by bringing miniute to miniute reading on various weather parameters. I toally understand your explanations with regard to some variations in rain fall quantum, but for curiosity could you please tell me in which place in chennai, this rainfall has been recorded. I feel it should be with in city.

I do understand always chennai meenambakkam and nungambakkam get some variations not only in rain fall but also in temperatures. But it is quite understandable the distance is around 15 KMS from each weather stations.

  3. remnants of Ward is at 10.0 N 80.6 E.

GFS is expecting it to become a storm and hit south TN coast until Chennai and enter BOB.

This has happenned a few years back. These things travel really quickly. If it starts by 34, we could have this 30G thing by tonite.

  4. Its

    Raining – Pondicherry & cuddalore
    Drizzling – Nagapattinam & Thanjavur
    Haze- Kanyakumari
