Dear All,
As per radar moderate to heavy showers approaching chennai in another one hour, as we could find lot of red lines from 30 Kilometers distance. Considering the lenght and breadth of cloud pattern i anticipate more than 25 centimeters of rain fall till tomorrow 8.30 and further 20 to 25 centimeters tomorrow also. we can easily get not less than 40 centimeters of rain fall over 36 hours span ( from this moment to till tomorrow evening). Even after land fall we can expect showers i.e. till sunday evening./

dash,
Cyclones are mostly one day affair. This cyclone will give two days of Rain.
Dont compare this to Jal. Its a better storm than that.
By: Pradeep John on December 29, 2011
at 7:47 am
SRI doppler is not that much promising. May be heavy rain bands are out of its range.
Sat images are much more encouraging this time when compared to Jal with the cloud mass staying near the storm centre and not sheared away to the southern quadrant like in the case of Jal.
So definitely more rains can be had from Thane.

cyclone thane is the one of the worst cyclones that i have ever see.very small cyclone by size.even cyclone laila is better than cyclone thane.cyclone thane doesnt seem like a cyclone,it seems like a cloud mass thats solve.cyclone thane is very small cyclone but just too much low pressure at center of the cyclone thane.so guys there is no need of that much hype about cyclone thane.i think chennai will receive hardly 1 day of rain.

latest satellite picture reveals the cloud patter shifted east. this system is started playing zig-zag. could be one more baaz of 2005. finally it might loose strength as depression and bring heaviest rainfall for a day. it has to immediatley move west. meterological department now started struggling to give a right forecast.
now the system lies at about 12 north and nearly 85 east moved by 0.75 east in the last one hour. that is why there is total absence of winds and drizzle at chennai.

nope…the rains are 150 kms away
By: Pradeep John on December 28, 2011
at 8:49 pm
Chennai radar’s capacity enhanced to 375 kms distance from previous 250. but one strange thing we notice despite huge cloud mass, not much rains reflected in radar at about 300 to 400 KMS. Probably the distance is huge, no accuracy can we get. within 100 KMS only radar can pick right signals. So only the storm comes another 100 kms west, we can totally rely on radar.
Slight southward movement towards pondy would bring heavy rains to chennai/nellore. probably morethan winds, chennai might face floods from tomorrow afternoon. suddendly sweeping winds accompanied by drizzle have started here.

Ventilation effect – Hats off to JTWC
————————————–
It is at least 36 hours away from a landfall to the south of Chennai, likely over Pondicherry and neighbourhood, as suggested by a couple of international models.
Thane’ may not retain the strength on the go, but latest indications are that it may not weaken on the home stretch as noticeably as was thought would be the case in earlier forecasts. What seems to be holding it in good stead is the good ventilation, allowing it to ‘breathe’ in and out.
Earlier forecasts had de-rated the intensification prospects thanks to unhelpful sea-surface temperatures coupled with the ‘shearing effect’ of wayward winds on top of the storm tower. But, to a large extent, these are being offset by the ventilation effect, the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre said.
