@Vithansen – so glad you agree on the desiliting. We dont need water from Veeranam project or from Krishna project or any other river in AP. If we just desilted those 3 lakes water tankers would be history.
@Aruns1411 – extremely happy to note that you mentioned about the breeze. Thats one of the reasons why we left Bangalore. Frequent colds/coughs/allergies and air has so much smog/dust. In Chennai we have sea breeze that ensures fresh air every day.
Jon’s point that we have rains from June to December is a valid one too. The rains remove the dust from the trees. In Bangalore if you visit in November or December you will see trees that have leaves full of dust.
Aruns1411
99B is a low in bay i think u know that. Models are showing further this system to develop and move towards TN coast!
So, this 99B invest will invest in Chennai!
hi what i mean is WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER WORLD CITIES LIKE NEWYORK ETC AND THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE,ALL INDIAN METRO CITIES ARE UTTERLY WASTE.INDIA IS STILL A DEVELOPING COUNTRY!!!!!!WHY CANT OUR METRO CITIES MATCH NEWYORK,PARIS SO ON?????BUT EVEN THOUGH I AM FROM COASTAL ANDHRA,I PREFER TO GET SETTLED IN CHENNAI BECAUSE
1)EXCELLENT ROADS AND GOOD REGULATION OF TRAFFIC
2)CHENNAI’S COST OF LIVING IS LESS THAN BANGALORE COMPARITIVELY.
3)I DONT WANT TO SETTLE IN HYDERABAD BECAUSE I DONT KNOW WHEN TELANGANA ISSUE WILL BREAK.
BBC Forecast – A new system to form in south central bay this weekend, move towards Andaman and then take a u-turn towards central bay !!! Will it come to us like the first spell??
@jon – I agree with you on Bangalore regarding infrastructure. In its favour because of the up and down plateau rain water does not stagnate. But the less said about its traffic and pollution the better. We stayed there till 2007 , hated it and relocated to Chennai in 2007. I sadly missed the 2005 monsoon – was in Bangalore at that time.
@ashwinds- please visit chandigarh for outstanding infrastructure. Its a totally planned city. They also have good drainage.
What about getting from point A to point B in Bangalore ? Its much much more easier in Chennai. Bangalore roads are as bad as Chennai roads after rains. Besides they have perennial river in Cauvery so they dont yet have water problems. However if we desilted Chembarakkam, Red Hills and Ponneri tanks we wont have to bed for water from AP ever again. Why we cant desilt those lakes is something nobody can imagine.
This coupled with rain water harvesting can make Chennai the number one metro.
Some one said about western countries and compared with India… India is a developing country and will be in a developing country for another 100 years coz of corruption. I have been to many cities in India and have stayed there .. Mumbai , Delhi, Haryana, Kolkata, Patna, Bangalore , Hyderabad & my home town chennai.. There are + and – … Delhi is worst place to live followed by haryana…A person cannot walk alone at night.. Weather wise they are extreme too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Bangalore is good interms of weather.. But it has the most unhealthy weather which creates multiple ailments. Pollen are found in the air which is again most unhealthy..Limited breeze… people dont sweat , hence addding up toxins in their body… Bangalore place became highlighted coz of Infosys and wipro, where many IT industry started business following these two companies.. Else, bangalore willl be the same like other two tier cities… Roads are narrow and non moving traffic for hours together.. Roads in chennai are broader, good connectivity of bus, trains & airport, minimal water problems, There was no electricity problem in chennai.. coz of corrupted politicians, today we are facing the heat, weather wise hot during summer and pleasant during rainy days and most pleasant during Dec – Feb.. Nice breeze as air is fresh during the morning hours.Changes are needed if chennai need to become no 1 city in india. It is not only in the hands of politicians but in the public too…
@ashwinds – you will love chandigarh – given your obsession with cool climates. South West Monsoon will give you delightful days in July/August. If you dont like the plains you can always head to Himachal Pradesh for cooler climes. Summer is hot but with A/C you can manage. Minimal humidity over there.
@kea – when I say it hit and miss monsoon I meant for Nungambakkam only in comparison to 2005. South Chennai got copious amounts of rainfall.
Since Nungambakkam is the standard I had said its a hit and miss monsoon. Secondly since 2005 we have all raised our expectations of more rain. I dont know if you remember but that year Palaar river off Chenglepet was flooded. In my whole life I have always known that river to be dry. It was a huge thrill to see Palaar river of all rivers to flow like Cauvery or Tamaraparni. It was once in a lifetime event.
@ashwinds – thats what i thought felt like too – this rain was like no great shakes. I expected close to 2020 mm for Chennai not realised I think.
@sundar – When I say northern AP – I meant basically coastal AP and Telangana. I think they had good rains this year.
worldwide rank is 141 which is very poor.so no reason to be proud of tat and Chennai is the best city in India for the overall security.bengloor is not classified as metro acc to tat survey
Getting sentimental about any Indian city is naive to say the least. Not sure how many of you have lived outside india especially in the west. In comparison all Indian cities suck. We have water, electricity, sanitation, transport and security problem in each and every city in this country. I have lived 2 decades in chennai, about a decade in bangalore, some time in mumbai and in USA. If chennai suffers from uni dimentional culture, then bangalore suffers from multidimentinal inefficiencies.
Well put. While I agree there is much scope for improvement in other cities as well, I think we Chennaites lounge too much in our historic pride while other places are leaving them behind.
You only need to take a look at the growth in infrastructure in newer cities like Bangalore, Pune, Gurgaon and Hyderabad to see how tardy our own progress is. I mean, this day and age, people die falling in open drains, shut down schools and see main roads dissolve in what can at best be called heavy rain.
People need to get out of Chennai more to see its inadequacies – be it weather, language or openness to change.
Apologies for the off topic rant – today promises to be a dry, warm day with little chance of rain.
bengloor doesnt get flooded since it receives vry modest rainfall. But its completely diff scenario in chennai.chennai receives rains continuously from june till dec( 7 months )
And dont say tat bengloor has a good infrastructure.Be it traffic or be it urban planning, it is worst in the country
“Ok, Let me give an insight of whats kolaveri english. 30.1 raina to bravo 1 run-u bowled-u offside-u, pushed-u to cover-u and run-u.” This, from Revanth, was coming.
31.1

somebody commented about northern AP getting a good monsoon, true!. But this year monsoon has failed so far in vizag and other places, trace rainfall if any.
As per my readings there are 2 bigger systems likely in bay of bengal during december one before 7th and the other around middle of the month. Saturn transit also can cause disturbance over bay.
in the meanwhile radar reflects rains between 100 and 200 kms south east of chennai. hoepfully chennai might get back in to rain belt by midnight, as IMD has already brought southern peninsula under fresh easterly wave for another 48 hours commencing from tomorrow.
I don’t accept Saturn transit will bring rain or anything. Since I too know astrology although I am a astronomer, I don’t think old books of astrology said those kind of false information!
Please Maisuh – dont give astrology a bad name by talking about incomplete facts. If you have a complete prediction please present your numbers for what is left of NEM by quoting a number. Dont give half baked facts and justify it with astrology.
Very good point selvan…definitely easterlies very strong in bay…also its still very very hot and humid…that means another system is on the way….winter weather is more dry and pleasant….this is by no means January weather. There is no ‘nip’ in the air yet….
Any system in Bay of Bengal. Any rain possible for for Chennai coming weeks . still north east monsoon not giving bulk rain for nungambakkam and meenambakkam. These year highest rain for cuddalore district, thiruvallur dist, tiruvarur dist villupuram dist. pondy. ennore got 20cm poondi, nellore got 18cm but Chennai manage 5 to 10cm why Chennai does not bang big rain, coming December month always hope for south tamilnadu deltas region and srilanka. Any change of rain for Chennai please update the rain details for Chennai. EXPERTS PLEASE UPDATE THE COMING DAY RAINY DAYS FOR CHENNAI
Thats how north east monsoon goes for Chennai and north Tamil Nadu. Its a hit and miss monsoon. Sometimes we get lucky like 2005, 1996 or 1997 and other times not so lucky.
If you relocate to Kerala or Karnataka or Maharastra or northern AP you can expect to see good rainfall like you desire
arb sea 5A: “THE

Was just scattered clouds early in the morning. NOw its a little more overcast with a lovely breeze – very pleasant. Wont be disappointed if it stays this way without raining
tis one luks cmpltly opposite of imd extended forecast mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/appcontroller?prevPage=Model&MainPage=index&image=&page=Param&cycle=11%2F28%2F2011+06UTC&rname=PRECIP+PARMS&pname=precip_p24&pdesc=&model=GFS&area=ASIA&cat=MODEL+GUIDANCE&fcast=8+Day+Loop&areaDesc=Asia&prevArea=ASIA&currKey=model&returnToModel=&imageSize=M
one stupid doubt is chennai north coastal tamilnadu … sorry when ever ramanan says it will rain in north coastal tamilnadu it will never rain in chennai
I am a software engineer myself…so I have seen your site overall – you have done a very good job. Layout of the main page looks great with the new buttons – you have got more real estate now than before.
only 3 mm in 2 hours. I expected 30 mm in the same period. I think because of lack of wind these clouds are dissipating over sea and we are getting only the left overs.
The 45 dBZ(heavy) spots on the radar are still about 100 km away. If this system holds along that horizontal axle from chennai to mid bay of bengal then that trough can push westward and dump rain.
in all directions towards sea, we could find moderate rains for first 30 kms. and finally some heavy showers as per radar. probably within 30 minutes, chennai would get atleast one to centimeters of rain before 5 30 Pm.
arabian cyclone is too far away, and still chennai is under cloud cover which gives us an impression some other disturbance developing over bay.
Drizzles started in chennai central….Still the flooded waters are not yet dried in central MMC complex, egmore, perambur , puraisaiwakkam and Valluvar kottam..
This NEM is actually a real failure not because of rainfall, but the lack of lows.We are supposed to have an average of 2-3 named storms per NEM,but this time, we have had 4 lows and only one has been named.Thane (if it forms) will make it 2 out of 4.
By: Sudharshan Madhavan on November 28, 2011 at 2:41 pm
Amazing… so far all the 5 systems formed were only troughs in easterlies ( I mean on the BOB side from SW Bay to WC Bay)…no LP Area formed in the Bay so far…. and we hv received around 72 to 76 cms of rain… Roughly Considering 22nd Dec to be the closing day for NEM, we stil hv around 25 days left. Two more systems possible??
What’s that cloud mass east of lanka?? Will the Bay throw up some more surprises??
Absolutely Karthik ! You said it …look at the radar at 8.30 am its very very close to Chennai yet I cant see any clouds that are like what we had so far….its quite dark but the east/south east is still very clear. I hope it hits Nungambakkam first for Kea’s sake
From my terrace I dont see any clouds towards the south eastern direction whatsoever. Its clear..Its very dark above me but only upto 500 metres. They have been dark for 2 hours now. Also today no wind at all…so sea is not as rough
for those of you who are complaining this NEM is not good, its deficient. Pls see the below facts.
Rainfall received till now is 711 mm
Normal rain for NEM is 857 mm
Difference is 146 mm
Last 11 years December average is 154 mm. Moreover November is not over yet, We might even complete the normal rain of 857 in next 3 days itself. Who knows?
That is true its normal so far. However what I am saying is that is it it an exceptional year like 2005 ? I think the south west monsoon raised expectations that we could have 2000 mm this year. That has not been realized for nungambakkam so far.
Nellore 18 cm but Nungambakkam still deficient as far as NEM is concerned. Expected 86 cms for the year only 70 cms so far. Can we get at least another 14 cms in December ? Highly Unlikely.
Pradeep if you actually analyze this monsoon are you bit surprised that this year Nungambakkam has not had big rainfall in a single day ? But for the SWM providing 85 cms this would be a deficient NEM is it not so ?

forget the cuttack match…
NEM Intl cup
the equation – nunga requires 86 runs from 63 deliveries…. (86 cms from 63 days of normal NEM period, Oct 20 to Dec 22nd)
so far 71 runs from 40 deliveries…..
15 more to get from 23 balls…
easy target eh?
last year reckon..nunga made only 75 and mina 64… they lost the match
pals..u cud update this score daily….fun to watch…

Kolaveri in Cricinfo today!!!
“Ok, Let me give an insight of whats kolaveri english. 30.1 raina to bravo 1 run-u bowled-u offside-u, pushed-u to cover-u and run-u.” This, from Revanth, was coming.
31.1
Sharma to Pollard, 1 run, 77.4 kph, flat from Rohit, Pollard drags it away through midwicket for one.

Please Maisuh – dont give astrology a bad name by talking about incomplete facts. If you have a complete prediction please present your numbers for what is left of NEM by quoting a number. Dont give half baked facts and justify it with astrology.

By: aswind12 on November 29, 2011

Hit and miss monsoon? What category does 2011 fall under? Also 2008, 2009 and 2010.
In my opinion all these years were good.
By: keaweather on November 29, 2011

not even one LP this year, leave alone cyclone.
2-3 spells (long as they maybe) of SWM type rain. Not a failure, but definitely not the kind of NEM we tout as a success.

By: VSN on November 28, 2011
at 3:10 pm
kea.
in all directions towards sea, we could find moderate rains for first 30 kms. and finally some heavy showers as per radar. probably within 30 minutes, chennai would get atleast one to centimeters of rain before 5 30 Pm.
arabian cyclone is too far away, and still chennai is under cloud cover which gives us an impression some other disturbance developing over bay.

This NEM is actually a real failure not because of rainfall, but the lack of lows.We are supposed to have an average of 2-3 named storms per NEM,but this time, we have had 4 lows and only one has been named.Thane (if it forms) will make it 2 out of 4.

By: aswind12 on November 28, 2011

Rains are just a few kms away. its a very slow moving storm. if it moves with the same speed after reaching, chennai will be drenched again.

By: keaweather on November 28, 2011

if it doesnt die and it continues to crawl like it is now, we will have a long spell. The 600+ is still a possibility
By: ashwinds on November 28, 2011

From my terrace I dont see any clouds towards the south eastern direction whatsoever. Its clear..Its very dark above me but only upto 500 metres. They have been dark for 2 hours now. Also today no wind at all…so sea is not as rough

Radar is back now, but the cloud mass seem stuck about 80 kms away from Chennai. But it has been very cloudy and still at Adyar.
By: tbalaj on November 28, 2011
at 12:47 pm
it is a slow moving storm. Also today there is no wind whatsoever.
Whether this is good or bad only time will tell.
By: keaweather on November 28, 2011
at 12:57 pm
for those of you who are complaining this NEM is not good, its deficient. Pls see the below facts.
Rainfall received till now is 711 mm
Normal rain for NEM is 857 mm
Difference is 146 mm
Last 11 years December average is 154 mm. Moreover November is not over yet, We might even complete the normal rain of 857 in next 3 days itself. Who knows?
By: keaweather on November 28, 2011
at 10:57 am
That is true its normal so far. However what I am saying is that is it it an exceptional year like 2005 ? I think the south west monsoon raised expectations that we could have 2000 mm this year. That has not been realized for nungambakkam so far.
By: aswind12 on November 28, 2011

By: vijay on November 28, 2011
at 9:12 am
nellore 18 cm
By: jon on November 28, 2011
at 8:40 am
Nellore 18 cm but Nungambakkam still deficient as far as NEM is concerned. Expected 86 cms for the year only 70 cms so far. Can we get at least another 14 cms in December ? Highly Unlikely.
By: aswind12 on November 28, 2011
at 8:52 am
Kea, the fifth spell which will set on December 4th or 5th is more promising day by day.
http://expertcharts.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/2011/11/27/basis18/swas/prec/11120518_2718.gif
And as far as current spell, heavy rain is forecasted for tomorrow.

Pradeep,
The first spell was the longest from oct 24-nov 6th..there was no lull there!
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 28, 2011
at 8:30 am
i read an article in Hindu saying that particular spell was unusually long for 12 days running…NEM spells are mostly only for 3-4 days
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 28, 2011
at 8:31 am
Pradeep if you actually analyze this monsoon are you bit surprised that this year Nungambakkam has not had big rainfall in a single day ? But for the SWM providing 85 cms this would be a deficient NEM is it not so ?
By: aswind12 on November 28, 2011
at 8:50 am
Nunga 21 mm
Meena 13
Kea you have to add 3 mm more to the total.
