The worst cyclone in my living memory to cross Chennai is the one in 1994 severe cyclone BOB 03
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_North_Indian_Ocean_cyclone_season#Severe_Cyclonic_Storm_BOB_03
In second place comes the 1996 cyclone
I remember this cyclone….It went to South Andhra and then came back to Chennai with a direct hit. it was in the evening around 4.0 pm the cyclone crossed the coast.
The strongest to cross TN in last 20 years is 1993 Very Severe Cyclonic Storm BOB 03

With current GFS model, the huge mass of clouds s.e of lanka would likely form a circulation and move towards south east of maldives and would further move south.. There will be another circulation which would be forming on 87th hour from now on at s.e east of lanka. This will not bring any rain to t.n… I think we are heading towards end of NEM 2011….

By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 27, 2011

Is this all time or since records available wettest for nunga?
By: keaweather on November 27, 2011
at 8:11 pm
I would imagine so. Though if you talk to some senior citizens they swear that 1943 was the wettest year ever. But its still only third on the all time list. From Pradeep Joh’s comment he reckons 1996 was like a amazingly wet year where he got 7 days holidays in June…
But before records were kept in the 19th century who knows ? Maybe there were…

@Kea – does the IMD rain gauge account for wind deviation of rainfall ?
Does their reading differs from yours for Nungambakkam ?
By: aswind12 on November 27, 2011
at 10:05 am
It is impossible to get the same reading. Sometimes even reading of 2 streets differ.
Regarding the wind, I think they have a bigger rain gauge. I think it catches more rain, but still not 100 %.
By: keaweather on November 27, 2011
at 10:43 am
So what you are saying in effect is – actual rainfall is MORE than the most ACCURATE digital rain gauge can capture. I would estimate the difference to be close to 10 %. Is that accurate ?
By: aswind12 on November 27, 2011
at 11:42 am
If you actually compare the numbers between your web site and IMD’s their numbers are almost identical. Is your residence located near to IMD ?

Mine is rudimentary.
I use a cylindrical sambadam (i.e vessel). Place it my terrace and measure it with a scale.
Terrace is fairly open, so impact of winds will not that much.
