The system is likely intensify into a deep depression
and subsequently int a cyclonic storm and move northwestwards during next 72 hours. – IMD
JTWC says it will not become a cyclone. But I think IMD will name it Thane even if does not reach cyclone status.

I was not in Chennai during 1996, 1997 , 2001 and 2005. can somebody who was living in Chennai then and who is reading this blog tell us how those four years were as far as SWM/NEM is concerned ? Was it similar to this year ? According to rainfall statistics 1996 and 1997 were big rainfall years. Sadly I was not in Chennai then…can somebody tell us a night time story about those years ? Thanks..
By: aswind12 on November 26, 2011
at 8:38 pm
1996 was awesome…..i still remember the rainfall holidays. June rain holidays are rare but we got holidays for nearly for a week.
Chennai got rains from a Cyclone and if i am right in 3 days we got around 700 mm rainfall…..
By: Pradeep John on November 26, 2011
at 9:02 pm
Thanks Pradeep. Was 1996 mostly SWM or did NEM also have big contribution ? How about 1997 ? Similar ?
By: aswind12 on November 26, 2011
at 9:05 pm
1996 was both SWM and NEM….In NEM too Chennai got around 1200 mm rainfall and total rainfall crossed 2400 mm mark
By: Pradeep John on November 26, 2011
at 9:11 pm
So Pradeep since you remember those years well – am I correct in saying that during those years – 1996, 1997 and 2005 – bulk of the rain came from cyclones ?
However in 2011 we have not had a single cyclone but we still have had steady downpour (not a lot) but continous rain since June.
But in 1996 and 1997 bulk of the rain fell over a short time period. Is that correct ?

The korattur that comes in IMD table and the Korratur anaicut has matched everytime in May-sep this year!! …
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 26, 2011
at 6:18 pm
If they were different, the readings must differ at leats for 50% of days!
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 26, 2011

And the lakes don’t often feature in IMD table….as the Metro water link, provides full details everyday
!
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 26, 2011
at 6:23 pm
Kar, i asked them whether this readings id the Korattur near Padi or the one in Thiruvallur high road.
They said its the one in the city….i also had a feeling that it did not rain 9 cm in my house. It was around the same mark of Nunga + or – 10 mm

@Pradeep,
Even IMD depends upon CMWSSB for korattur rainfall…..in the chennai metro water page, they have not updated..its still 25/11
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 26, 2011
at 5:54 pm
ah i know you will tell this…..I inquired with them….IMD said this Korratur reading is not the one of Korratur Anicut.
By: Pradeep John on November 26, 2011

KEA,
In Kodambakkam there were some showers between 11.40 & 11.45. It could be around 4 to 5 Millimters. After 12 it rained so heavily for nearly 35 minutes and going by my experience, certainly it would have crossed another 40 millimeters. So your rain guage is not showing the right picture.
strangely we get cloud burst moving from south east. we can expect one or two before this evening, as radar continues to pick up red lines.

Averaged the rainfall at district level as reported in
http://tawn.tnau.ac.in/
Whopping 49 mm for the state for the day ending at 08.30 hrs. This figure should be higher as some odd stations have reported 0 mm rainfall accross a few districts. This is very unusual as all other stations have reported some rainfall. These ones pull down the avg heavily.
Rainfall in all districts. Lowest rainfall 8.9 for CBE and then 14 mm for Ramnad. 86mm for Villupuram.

What a rain. But only 20? That’s because of the wind. I am sure its much more. It’s difficult to capture all the rain in high wind.

I think rain approaches the city fast from south east direction. it looks like moderate long showers after one hour, considering the length of the red line.
if it maintains the same direction, the core portion would cut across city from tiruvanmiyur and lands itself to avadi covering most parts of south, central chennai. probably north chennai may not get full impact. radar is really interesting

Dear KEA.
The system which at present in arabian sea near cochin would be of no use to tamil nadu as it continues to move north and probably dissipiate in between. But stil the sky is not cleared in chennai which gives me an impression some disturbance over south central bay and satellite picture supports my view. Already radar reflect rain bearing clouds ( red dotted lines over 40 KMS south east of chennai. I think rains over chennai wuld resume by afternoon. Bay to be watched.
I hope you can start the new topic ” New system over bay ”
ANy view on this by readers please.

what a great spinner harbhajan is!!…how can they drop him??….specially when he takes a lot of wickets against bangladesh, england, new zealand, provided there is a crater on the pitch…..nobody shud blame him if the pitch is not turning and if he goes for runs!!….let medioce spinners like ashwin get wickets on cement road pitches…world class spinners like Bhajji will take wickets only with crater-laden pitches
By: karthikraghavan1994 on November 26, 2011
at 10:31 am
I Somehow disagree with your comments on Ashwin.. Every spinner has their own talent.. Ashwin is new to internation cricket and you cant compare with Bhajji who has played several international match.. It is a tendency not only in sports but in corporate world.. There needs to be a sucessor… Probably ashwin in that category.. Bhajji’s performance is quite dissapointing as he was away from international match for couple of series… His bowling in IPL & CLT20 was not upto the mark.. this is the fact !!
